South Africa 2010
Draw ignites FIFA World Cup fever
The 32 teams participating at next year's FIFA World Cup™ finals discovered their fate this evening when the Final Draw for South Africa 2010 took place in Cape Town.
An estimated global television audience of 200 million joined the 2,000 invited guests in the Draw Hall in watching the colourful and entertaining ceremony unfold. With African sporting stars such as athlete Haile Gebreselassie, rugby player John Smit, cricketer Makhaya Ntini, and footballers Matthew Booth and Simphiwe Dludlu assisting with the draw, along with England icon David Beckham, it was always going to be an exhilarating evening, but the undoubted centrepiece came when the eight groups were revealed.
While South Africans smiled upon learning that the host nation's Opening Match on 11 June would be played against Mexico at Soccer City, it was the outcome of Group D which caused the biggest stir. Germany, Australia, Serbia and Ghana will battle it out for the two qualifying places for the Round of 16, meaning that two nations with a proud footballing heritage will have to depart the tournament early.
The early stages of the draw brought a very interesting match-up as England were paired together with USA in a match which will take place in Rustenburg on Saturday 12 June, which brought back memories of the clash at Brazil 1950, which USA won 1-0. However, Fabio Capello and Bob Bradley avoided a nightmare group, with Algeria and Slovenia also coming out of the hat.
Group G looks a tricky section with Brazil, Korea DPR, Côte d'Ivoire, Portugal all drawn together too.
Group A: South Africa, Mexico, Uruguay, France
Group B: Argentina, Nigeria, Korea Republic, Greece
Group C: England, USA, Algeria, Slovenia
Group D: Germany, Australia, Serbia, Ghana,
Group E: Netherlands, Denmark, Japan, Cameroon
Group F: Italy, Paraguay, New Zealand, Slovakia
Group G: Brazil, Korea DPR, Côte d'Ivoire, Portugal
Group H: Spain, Switzerland, Honduras, Chile
Although the dates and locations of each of the 48 matches are known for the group-stage games, the kick-off times will be announced shortly, upon conclusion of a meeting between FIFA, the Local Organising Committee and broadcasters.
A night to remember
With such an array of stars, the event dazzled from start to finish. After a welcome from Lions Head, the mountain which provides Cape Town with such a dramatic backdrop, award-winning musician Johnny Clegg then performed 'Scatterlings of Africa', a song made famous by the Academy Award-winning film Rain Main.
Fittingly, the first speech of the evening came from the man without whom a FIFA World Cup in South Africa would never have been possible, namely the country's former president Nelson Mandela. The 91-year-old, speaking in a special video message, urged his country to make the most of the opportunity of being the host country. "We must strive for excellence in our hosting of the World Cup, while at the same time ensuring that the event leaves a lasting benefit to all our people," he said.
It was then time for two special presidents to take to the stage. FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter and South African President Jacob Zuma showed their excitement at the Final Draw and the 2010 FIFA World Cup itself in an entertaining dialogue which lasted for several minutes. Giancarlo Abete, the President of the Italian Football Federation, then handed over the FIFA World Cup Trophy to Mr Blatter, confirmation that the sport's holy grail is in South Africa and ready to be contested next year.
Portuguese legend Eusebio, born in neighbouring Mozambique, was introduced to the crowd before examples of the 'Win In Africa With Africa' campaign were highlighted to the expectant audience. Beninese singer-songwriter Angelique Kidjo then took to the stage to perform her Grammy-nominated song 'Agolo'.
The first duty of the show's guest presenter, Academy Award-winning actress, Hollywood producer and proud South African Charlize Theron, was to show off the official 2010 Match Ball, adidas's Jabulani, a name which means 'to celebrate' in Zulu. Soweto’s Gospel Choir, continued the theme of happiness with a lively rendition of Pata Pata before the arrival of Draw Master and FIFA Secretary General, Jerome Valcke, signalled that it was time for the moment of truth.
Some of the assembled coaches will have headed away feeling confident, others concerned by the task presented them here, yet at least all now know what lies in store as they begin their planning and preparation for next year's event.
If you’ve been playing Power Soccer in the last week, then you are probably aware of the fact that two big changes have occurred in Power Soccer. You all know that before Clan Cups were only available to members or to people who pay 2 power tokens. The first recent update was that Clan Cups are now free to all. The second update occurred on Monday, February 8, 2010. Whenever you play a game in Power Soccer, a match usually lasts 6 minutes (excluding replays etc.). Now the Crew has changed the game length from 6 minutes two 4 minutes, about a 17% decrease. In this article, I will be discussing the Pros and Cons of both updates and gathering some thoughts from some users. I will begin by discussing the Clan Cup update.
Pros
It gives non-members another feature – As you know, non-members are limited to features because they have not paid a specific amount of money for club membership or tokens. Now with this update, non-members will now receive sort of like a new feature
Brings ALL clans to life – Not every clan is all full of members. There are thousands and thousands of clans full of non-members and with this update, everyone in a clan will be able to play a clan cup. Worried about not helping out your own clan? Have no fear, this update is here!
Clan Cups will have more players and will start faster – Now that thousands of more users clan play clan cups there will be lots of more participants thus starting the cup faster.
Cup invites are actually now good use – Before this update, many non-members would complain about the repetitive incoming clan cup invites that they cannot join. With this update, those random cup invites will come to good use.
Cons
Club members are losing a big benefit – Before this update, many users would buy club membership to be able to play for their clan. Now that clan cups are free, members are losing a precious part that they bought. What’s left of club member benefits? League, badge, team name, nicknames, Club Zone forum and a few minor features?
Crew might lose a bit of money – Like I said, many users buy club membership for the sake of clan cups. Now with this update, fewer people will buy membership and use tokens on the clan cups. I’m not an expert to predict how much money the Crew will loose, but it might be quite a bit.
Speaking from a non-memeber perspective this update is amazing. It’s making almost everyone happy. Non-members and most club members. Thank you Crew! Now I can contribute to my clan.
The second update in Power Soccer was that the matches were shortened from 6 minutes to 4 minutes. There are much more arguments to this update then to the Clan Cup update. I will once again list the Pros and Cons with some description
Pros
Games will be faster – With this update, games will be a lot faster which means you can play more games in a set of time. If you wanted to play straight officials for an hour, then you would play approximately 9 matches. But with this update, you can play an extra 2-4 games.
More intense games – With shorter time, both opponents in a match will be fighting harder for a win. It will mean tougher action and strategies.
Cups will USUALLY run faster – Now that the game is shorter there will be time to play lots of cups. You will be able to play a quick basic cup (even with many players). You can gain ranking points faster for your clan using the (new) free clan cups.
XP will be gained faster – At least with faster matches you can level up faster. No more having to take a year to get to level 99. Instead that journey will be shortened by a few months.
Cons
Less time for goals – Shorter gameplay means less goals. Adding on to this fact there will probably be many 0-0 or 1-1 or even 2-2 matches rather than 6-5 or 3-1 like we had before this update
Less time for chatting – What’s a match without a nice conversation. There will be less time to talk with your opponent.
The game is all about the first goal – Now with this update, whoever scores the first goal will always have a better advantage because he/she will have less time to defend the lead. They will focus more on defending the ball rather than scoring more goals.
Cups will not always run faster – Crew, are you aware of the 100% bug when a match gets stuck loading at 100% and it never stops. Then you have to wait a long time for the match to get unreported. Which means the cup lengths will not always be shorter.
Less RP to be gained – You gain RP based on if you win your opponent, how higher or lower is their ranking from yours, and the score difference. Now with less goals means that less RP will be gained. This will mean it will take longer to climb the rankings. On the bright side you don’t lose as much RP.
Who wants to play a game for a short period of time? – I don’t know about you but playing one match for 4 minutes is stupid. If FIFA or PES games were as well structured as Power Soccer and its whole website and features, I’d might as well play a FIFA or a PES game online via wi-fi with an Xbox360 or PlayStation game.
So as you can see for this update, the Cons outweigh the Pros. In my opinion, this update was not a bright idea. It may shorten cups and all, but it shortens the value and fun of the game. I decided to get some opinions for both of these updates from some great users:
Dainsanefh said: Free clan cups: I like this idea as a temporary thing. we can use it to kind of promote what people with club membership would be getting. i’m not too sure if Pow or anyone else said that this would be forever or just temporary but i’m hoping it is temporary. I like that many people are having fun with clan cups, but i think clan cups played a nice role in the reason for people wanting to become club members. Now…people just don’t have too much of a reason to be club members. So, they might just stop making as much money as before. Shortened games: I don’t care much about this. It’s not really going to help nor hurt so i don’t have a problem with this. games will go faster, that’s for sure, but it’s nothing to get alarmed about.
PinkPixie: I’m luvin the free clan cups idea! Users in my clan who aren’t club members can now participate in clan cups meaning they feel more included and the rating now represents us more as a whole then just representing a few members of the clan. I also think that new clans will rise to the top which will be interesting to see. And hopefully captains will now look at more then just club membership in future prospects for their clans, as this was a huge problem before. Shortened games? Well honestly I’m torn about this one… although I understand the idea behind it and realise that this means; more matches will be played, xp will be earned quicker, and cups played faster.. I’m still not 100 % for this idea, mainly because I miss the social aspect of games and although I realise that friendlies are still 6 mins, officials and cups are great places to meet new ps users, and I personaly feel that 4 mins just isn’t enough to do that in…
Botten1: Free clan cups: Overall I think it is great. The clan cup activity in the community have increased alot after this update. It is always someone who is interested in joining your cup. If you are looking to join a cup, you mostly have atleast 2-3 options. Even as a clubmember, I feel more motivated now to play clan cups because of the high activiity. The only negative so far is that alot of non-CMs out there needs to learn that a clan cup is not something you should quit before it is finished. Shortened games: I don´t like it, and can not see any positive things about it. I don´t know if it has any significant effect on amount of games played, but my main object to this has to do with the possibility to start a match bad, and then come back changing both the match picture and the match result. In soccer we say that the game is not finished until we have reached 90 minutes. I´m sure you understand where I´m going with this.
I hope you have enjoyed reading this article (and the rest of my articles that I have written in my PRA stage). It just goes to show you that an update can cause an outrage to the community like the shortened games, or maybe a lot of happiness like the free clan cups. Thanks for reading this article!
